I've created an internet radio stream of Quote Unquote Records' music at qur.pnppl.cc.

§ Why ^

As much as I love their albums, I haven't listened to all of them. There are a lot!1 They're all good, though despite covering different styles of music. I wanted to shuffle all of the songs to explore them better and find good albums to start with. Which... I could just do. But then I'd have to fill up a bunch of space on my phone's SD card, and lately the music app has been really slow, and... wouldn't it be nice to have a permanent shuffle?

So that's what Quote Unquote Radio is. It's a sort of promise: as long as you can get online, there's a station you can tune into that's playing Quote Unquote Records.2 I'm not curating it or doing anything groundbreaking, just letting their music speak for itself.

Jeff Rosenstock's music means a lot to me. I always want to promote it (how better than an Icecast stream that maybe 4 people will hear???). Since it has a Creative Commons license, I don't have to worry about getting nuked for copyright infringement which is in fact one of the reasons I love Quote Unquote Records so much in the first place.

While I was at it setting up the radio, I set up Soulseek (slskd). Soulseek makes it a lot easier to download a lot of music at once, especially on Android (with Seeker). You can find Quote Unquote Radio on Soulseek under the username quote-unquote-radio. There's some non-QUR Creative Commons music available there as well.

The stream has already helped me discover new musicians. I tend to put it on in the morning out of paranoia that it might have stopped playing, and then the health check turns into me just listening to it because it's rad. Did you know Quote Unquote Records has at least one hip-hop album, by Boboso (and it's great)? Have you heard of Roar solo project of the drummer from AJJ who is apparently rather famous (deservedly)?3 These are new to me. The label is full of hidden gems.

I have some related, unfinished projects underway, but I wanted to put something up about this now so that I'm not the only one who can enjoy it. The stream's been live for a couple weeks now. Tune in!

§ Footnotes ^

  1. There are 116 albums, depending on how you count. <-|

  2. It's like how if you're driving in the middle of the night, the Constitution says you have to be able to listen to Coast to Coast. Or how it's required by federal statue that any given square foot of the United States must have signal coverage by a minimum of three horrible right-wing Christian stations. Quote Unquote Radio is a new law of reality as long as I can keep it online. <-|

  3. Roar's album I Can't Handle Change is the second-most downloaded one on the Soulseek server right now. The other top ten are Jeff, BTMI, and ASOB, plus Set Ourselves Free by The Wild. #1 is Worry. The total is currently at 1000+ uploads to 98 peers weighing 11+ GB. <-|
